Black Devil Disco Club: The Pendu Magazine Interview

Pendu Mag
Category: Features
Aug 6th 2010

[Outside the club, Glasslands Gallery, Johnny Sagan of PENDU interviews Bernard Fevre and his manager Ambre after their live performance for PENDU DISCO at Glasslands Gallery]

Ambre: Maybe you can ask me the questions, and then I translate, okay?

The audience is amazing

Johnny Sagan: Number one question: um…what’d you think of the show tonight?

[Ambre asks Bernard in French]

Ambre: Okay, he said, like…okay…“I can’t judge my own show, but I will say that the audience is amazing.”

Lady Miss Kier

Johnny Sagan: And…I noticed that he met Lady Miss Kier from Deee-Lite!

Ambre: Hm?

Johnny Sagan: I noticed that he met Lady Miss Kier Kirby, the lead singer of Deee-lite!

[Ambre confers with Bernard]

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay, we actually didn’t notice who it was!

Johnny Sagan: Oh!

Black Devil Disco Club: Yeah, because Bernard doesn’t speak any English.

Johnny Sagan: Oh.

[Bernard speaks to Ambre]

Black Devil Disco Club: So…I wasn’t there, so I don’t know who it was, but it was…I mean, he was happy to meet people, but for him it was no difference, because it didn’t…he didn’t understand, you know?

Johnny Sagan: Yeah. Yeah.

French Disco Freaks

[Bernard Fevre begins to speak in French...Ambre responds, and then one of our lovable French disco freak onlookers breaks in, and it appears that Ambre tells him that Lady Kier was in the house...he lets out a crazy whoop...]

French Disco Freak 1: Ah-hah-hah-hoo!

Johnny Sagan: That was Lady Miss Kier!

French Disco Freak 1: (overcome) Hoo…hooooo…hoo…

French Disco Freak 2: That was her?

Johnny Sagan: She was in the front row. Dancing, with the red hair…

French Disco Freak 1: Oh, she was dancing!

Maybe this is better

[Bernard Fevre says something to Ambre in French...]

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay, so they took pictures…and there was a big black guy taking pictures…

Johnny Sagan: Okay, so…

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay. He didn’t know who it was, but the feeling was…so good, between each other.

Johnny Sagan: Yeah.

Black Devil Disco Club: And…maybe this is better. (Ambre laughs)

How did he find his sound?

Johnny Sagan: Yeah. No, it’s true. It’s true. And then…okay, so another question is, just…you know, just tell the people in America a little bit about…how did he find this sound? Like, what helped…what equipment did he use to make the Black Devil Disco records?

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay, he said he used, like, ah…really like, ah, vintage keyboards and things like that. But he is unable to use it onstage, because…actually, we asked Morgan Geist how we could do this on stage, and we will need like fourteen keyboards to do it. So we have a computer, to do it for ourself, you know?

Favorite cities

Johnny Sagan: And then…my final question, because I don’t want to take up too much of the maestro’s time (Bernard Fevre laughs) is…what are his favorite countries, and cities, and places to play?

Black Devil Disco Club: Oh…good question. Okay, he said, like…ah…it’s a difficult and tricky question, because he hasn’t seen every city yet. But, um, yeah…the one he really loved was Detroit, and New York, and Montreal, and Barcelona…I think we can add Berlin…and Berlin.

Bernard Fevre: Berlin. Aix-en-Provence. (chuckles)

Ambre: Yeah, and Aix-en-Provence, in South of France, was amazing. With Moderat, we played with them. It was an amazing show. But the thing is that…

Bernard Fevre: Paris.

It always depends on the crowd

Ambre: Yeah, Paris was good, too. But yeah, it always depends on the crowd, and…you know.

Johnny Sagan: Yeah.

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay, he said that, ah…in a way, even if it’s a different city, it’s the same kind of crowd, you know? It’s not like…okay, it doesn’t matter where you from, it’s the music that you love that matter, you know?

Paris

Johnny Sagan: Yeah. Yeah. And then, about Paris: is there a favorite arrondisement?

Bernard Fevre: Ou j’habite?

Ambre: No no: l’arrondisement preferee a Paris…

Black Devil Disco Club: Okay, he said he really like the 18th Arrondisement. Because it’s like, ah, it’s a popular district, and it’s really cool, like with [D’or] and things like that, and Montmartre, for instance? But, um, he also likes, ah, the kind of…ah, you know, the Paris you can see in the movies, like La Seine, and the boats, and things like that…

Johnny Sagan: Les bateaus mouche…

Black Devil Disco Club: …exactly.

Johnny Sagan: Very nice, very nice. Cool man…well, just tell him that we in New York are so glad to have him come and play for us.

Ambre: Okay.

It was great for me

Bernard Fevre: [In English] It was great for me.

Johnny Sagan: Yeah! You brought out a great crowd, man. You brought out a great crowd…we were having so much fun.

[Ambre giggles]

Jul 26th 2010

[Outside the club, Glasslands Gallery, Johnny Sagan of PENDU interviews Sasha and Alex of BLISSED OUT after their live performance for PENDU DISCO at Glasslands Gallery]

Johnny Sagan: Okay, so I’m here with my PEOPLES, Blissed Out. SO glad I didn’t miss your performance.

Blissed Out 1: Chill.

Blissed Out 2: Dark.

Johnny Sagan: Yeah…”a lickle darkah!” You guys killed it.

Blissed Out 1: Dark!

Blissed Out 2: Dark!

Johnny Sagan: Love it that you had sequencers and drum machines on stage! There was not a laptop screen in sight.

Blissed Out 1: Fuck that shit.

Blissed Out 2: I don’t own one! At this point, I wish I did.

Blissed Out 1: Hahaha.

Johnny Sagan: It would make things easier, to like organize all the files?

Blissed Out 2: In my home life, it would make things…more easy.

Blissed Out 1: Fucking touring on smartphones is hard.

Blissed Out 2: But it’s doable…

Blissed Out 1: You can’t listen to Myspace songs.

Blissed Out 2: It’s hard, though…

Johnny Sagan: No, that’s true! Like, someone’s like, “Listen to my shit…” Yeah.

Blissed Out 1: But yeah, we want a laptop for other stuff, but not for making music.

Blissed Out 2: For porn!

Johnny Sagan: Communication.

Blissed Out 1: It’s all about, like…it’s really important to have things that are, like, special…

Johnny Sagan: Dedicated to different…

Blissed Out 1: Dedicated to music!

Johnny Sagan: …functions, yeah.

Blissed Out 1: It’s like the idea that, like, someone could be on their, like, laptop talking to their friends on AIM, you know…

Blissed Out 2: And they could also be on…oh, on AIM, yeah!

Blissed Out 1: Yeah, and, like Tweeting, or whatever, while they’re making music. It’s like, no: it’s like you have these special objects that you use sort of ritualistically to come back and, like, Do That Thing. Which is music, you know?

Jul 23rd 2010

[Outside the club, Glasslands Gallery, Johnny Sagan of PENDU interviews Scott and Isul of THE PRESENT MOMENT after their NYC-debut for PENDU DISCO at Glasslands Gallery]

Johnny Sagan: So…

Scott: Do you have a light, or…?

Johnny Sagan: Unfortunately, I don’t have a light.

Isul: I don’t [see any?], motherfuckers! No, not really, I…[unintelligible].

Johnny Sagan: I brought weed, I brought a one-hitter, but I didn’t bring a lighter.

Isul: It’s always funny, it’s like the people who actually smoke never have lighters.

Johnny Sagan: Well, because we steal them from each other.

Isul: You actually agree with me on that one. I like to hang out in the smoking section but not smoke…I, like, fake it.

Johnny Sagan: Aw, perfect. Perfect. Okay, let’s see if we can do this…[we both try to light our cigarettes off a votive candle]…use your long magician’s fingers…musician’s fingers…you can do it…Barcelona Style. I call this Barcelona Style…you are brilliant. That’s why you get the big bucks.

Isul: (mumbling) Yeah right, the NONE bucks…

Johnny Sagan: The Nunchuks…

Isul: Yeah…the nunchucks…[unintelligible].

Johnny Sagan: Okay, so: I’m here with The Present Moment. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Scott: Let’s hope so.

(both laugh)
