King Dude
King Dude came full force with his patented variety of “death folk.” Whereas his recorded material can come off bleak and dispossessed, the live incarnation breaks through the general malaise, revealing a humor of the darkest sort. It’s captivating in a way few “guy with a guitar” acts can manage. Kendra of WHITE RING joined onstage for “Slaves,” adding another layer of ice to the haunting call and response ballad. Highly recommend you see what dark landscapes King Dude has to offer you.

Cult of Youth
Performing an increasingly rare solo acoustic set, Sean of Cult of Youth made up for the lack of warm bodies onstage with an earnest energy that is sometimes eclipsed by other elements of the full band. Stripped of the experimental layers, the songwriting and performance took on an entirely different, unfiltered feel. It worked. A cover of Current 93’s “Dark Wood Too Awakes” was a definite highlight of the set.

Cosmetics
The restraint and minimalist tendencies of Cosmetics manifested themselves with an added organic touch that thawed the sound a bit and lended added danceability. For this exclusive engagement, they were joined with Dustin Payseur of BEACH FOSSILS. Never underestimate what a live bass can do. As side-chained reverb, square waves, and layers of thick fuzz have become increasingly ubiquitous, Cosmetics’ spare approach is a breath of fresh air. Nothing wrong with good old fashioned sexy electro pop. Set highlights included a spot on performance of “Black Leather.”

….

The night was rounded off with live-moshed-video-manipulations by LAUREL HALO projected across the wall and with DJ sets between bands colliding crunk, ebm, trance, black metal, and neo-folk into a blurried-haze by Bryan K and Kendra of WHITE RING and …. an amazing evening et al!

White Ring are the duo of Kendra Malia and Bryan Kurkimilis. They are quickly circulating around the internet with some heavy buzz over the last few months. They create dark electronic music in the vein of S4LEM and Mater Suspiria Vision influenced by Southern Hip-Hop, Trance, Gothic Shoegaze, and Industrial music. Deep groaning and buzzing basslines swell in a black pool of heavily layered oppressive atmospheres and depressive melodic synth lines. Visions and Occult images float within the pineal eye in a surrealist haze of black magick. This is danceable doom; haunting and visceral (and one of our favorite bands right now).
