They have me at a loss for words, seriously one of my favorite bands right now… dark occult sounds and visions, a perfect marriage of heaven and hell… Enjoy

Pendu is bringing S4LEM (http://www.myspace.com/s4lem) to NYC! Yes, it’s true…. Right now, there is no doubt that Salem is creating a unique presence in electronic music. Epic dark murky depressed; Perfect for the HOPE-less world we live in. People that haven’t heard them always ask what they sound like and it’s great hearing the varied responses. Their sound is elusive for a description that falls into a particular genre, but they’re not forcing this. This is not contrived strangeness. In my mind, their sound couldn’t exist in any other time period other than now and in the future. Nothing retro here. It’s black…Bleak even. A kind of Bleak Majik. A soundtrack for the disaffected and disowned. Deep tones laden with a backbone of syrupy Tylenol-3 skrewed beats in a sinister hazy swirling of poolwater-drowning darkness: Salem create a tense kind of skrewed-shoegaze (“skrewgaze”). Nihilism for Urban Youth. In some ways, even though the music is aesthetically removed from from metal, it still has me imagining what buzzsaw black metal would sound like if it were fucked with by the late DJ Skrew or by Three 6 Mafia but with ethereal vocals rising from the haze. They’re amazing, plain and simple. No hyperbole needed to sell the greatness of their work. There are bound to be imitators coming along behind them, but we know who the originators are.

Traum (part 2) Dreams are the pathway to our subconsciousness. Sigmund Freud
conceived them as an expression of the dreamer’s deepest fears and
desires. And some scientists have even analyzed the similarities
between the phenomenology of dreams and that of psychosis.
It is this mysterious combination of neural processes, hidden fears
and spiritual messages which makes dreams such a fascinating subject.
“Traum” tries to visualize this fine line between imagination and
reality – between otherworldly beauty and subliminal fear.
The mystic, surreal landscapes of Iceland, large waterfalls, sulfuric
smoke and the lava fields of Dimmuborgir built the background for
“Traum”. The sequence of photographs moves from almost frightening,
dark images to colorful works that literally pulsate with light.
“Traum” was shot over a period of several weeks in summer 2009.

Pendu Org’s Jesse Gelaznik interviews the elusive steet/graffiti artists Peru Ana Ana Peru in anticipation of their upcoming Solo Show Opening on Saturday October 17 at Brooklynite Gallery with musical guest THE BOMB SQUAD (of Public Enemy/Ice Cube fame). Yes, they are using computer voices… Yes you don’t get to see their faces. So who are they? Hmm… it seems they don’t want you to know. Enjoy the work. If you live in NYC, there’s no way you haven’t come across their tag. It’s literally fucking everywhere.
INTRODUCTION:
Work In Process is a title used by Daniel Carter (freejazz legend of Test!, Other Dimensions In Music, Ghost Moth) as an umbrella encompassing a vast body of related work. It is an unfinished, ongoing collection writings and poetry of extreme depth and scale.
Daniel Carter’s method of writing deals with ‘filling in the gaps’. Carter begins writing by first distributing ideas in short phrasings spontaneously across a page leaving ample space throughout. Later, the gaps are filled as the written phrases lead the mind of the writer into new thoughts. The cycle is repeated until the page is filled. The result is a dense forest of text referring to history, poetry, philosophy, mysticism, and the everyday. Daniel has literally written thousands of such pages.
I have also included an authorized reworking of the piece by yours truly. I was given the opportunity to break the text up into fragments without adding or taking away any words so that the text will render new meanings. It’s a poetic experiment between myself and Daniel. Enjoy.
Although there’s a new drummer in the midst, have no fear. From the opening notes of God Is Good, it’s obvious that Om are continuing to do what they do best; ecstatic head-nodding stoner jams lead by Al Cisnero‘s repetitive bass-riffing and hypnotic mantralike vocals. This is a new era for the band, as Emil Amos of Grails replaces Chris Hakius, but this has not taken away from all that makes Om great. On this effort they also invited Robert Lowe, aka Lichens, to play tamboura (an instrument similar to the sitar) on two of the tracks including the opening 19-minute epic track “Thebes,” which is able to stand equally alongside any of their previous albums. The last two songs feel a bit like filler, and yet they are strong tracks. They almost evoke a sense of aimlessness; like a nice walk where the goal isn’t really to get anywhere. God Is Good is not necessarily treading new territory here, but that’s doesn’t appear to be the aim; Om is far more interested in exploring nuance of textures and they continue to make great and complex music out of what on the surface sometimes appears simplistic.
For fans of the influential 1973 Red Hash album by Gary Higgins, this brand new album is a true gem and a great story. This is yet another artist from the late-60s/early-70s era along with Simon Finn, Vashti Bunyan and others who has been saved from obscurity and given the chance to once again do what they love: write great songs for an audience that is eager to listen; something these artists barely had in their supposed prime. Thirty-six years is an amazingly long time between albums and to hear him play now, other than the clarity of newer production, one could hardly tell. Don’t get me wrong, this record is not a “rehash” of Red Hash by any stretch, and it could be said that some of the mystique has been removed. Nonetheless, it holds up on its own. Truth is, without knowing any of Higgins’ history, the album itself stands alone as a strong, introspective folk record. Opening with “Demons,” the record moves seamlessly along hitting the “The 5AM Trilogy,” a 12-minute epic near the end of the album that floats along fluidly between an intricate instrumental feel and back to Higgins’ soft voice. The album closes with “Don’t Wanna Lose,” an uptempo song that feels like an earnest statement to holding on. Let’s hope another record follows.
