On Again // Off Again is pleased to announce the debut of their publication at Show Cave in Los Angeles, celebrating the printed works and bands featured in their first issue. Guests will have the opportunity to browse a pop-up shop curated by former Booster and Seven gallerists Brittany Reilly and Steph Pavone, featuring domestic and international artist books, records, t-shirts and various like-minded ephemera. Stay for two nights of both new and familiar bands and DJs from Texas and Chicago.

On Again // Off Again is a new publication that exists as both an artist book and a portable gallery. Challenging the spatial and temporal confines of the traditional “White Cube”, the Chicago-based magazine allows the viewer to interact with the collection of images and writing in an intimate yet malleable space.

Issue 01 is self-published by creators Steph Pavone and Zoe Weisman in a limited edition of 250. The debut issue consists of image makers, fashion and accessory designers, creative thinkers, musicians and those that help to facilitate these artists. With a hands-on, accessible demeanor, On Again // Off Again invites you to take the issue with you, tear some pages out and create a new context for them on your wall.

‘Restored to One’ – due out June 22, 2010 (US) and June 21, 2010 (UK) – is a modern response to the musical activities of a cult known as The Process Church of the Final Judgment, who used music to spread their visions of Gnostic reconciliation in a time of cataclysmic change. Sabbath Assembly has re-charged the original hymns of The Process Church and worked them into moving renditions that unite the trinity of rock, psychedelic and gospel into one triumphant re-awakening.

The Process Church was an intensely creative, apocalyptic shadow side to the flower-powered ’60s and New Age ’70s. The influential group opened Chapters in London, Europe and across the United States. Dressing in black cloaks and walking the streets with German Shepherds, they created their own intricately designed magazines, and promoted a controversial, quasi-Gnostic theology that reconciled Christ and Satan through deeper awareness and love. Funkadelic reproduced Process writings in two of its albums.

The Process Church was accused of being part of a Satanic underground conspiracy by true crime pulps, most notably Ed Sanders’ The Family, which linked the Church to the Manson murders. The insider’s perspective of this secretive group and its true leadership recently emerged with Feral House’s ‘LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH: The Inside Story of The Process Church of the Final Judgment’, written by former members including Timothy Wyllie, and edited by Adam Parfrey.

The recording follows on the heels of a highly successful, strategically planned series of live shows across the US in the Fall of 2009, which presented a ceremony featuring Sabbath Assembly performing the original hymns of the Church – all previously unrecorded. More live events shall follow along with a documentary on the Process Church made by William Morris of Skinny Puppy, a video for a song from the coming release, standard CD and LP releases and an archival LP box set (including readings of Process sacred literature by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Adam Parfrey, and Lydia Lunch, as well as LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH author Timothy Wyllie), and an off-Broadway theatre extravaganza entitled “Gaming the Gods” based on the rise and fall of the Church.

{Houdini} Séance

“A magician is just an actor playing a magician.” -Robert-Houdin
“The medium is the medium.”
“Magic is a matter of perception,” however, “Magic is what works.”

The séance is the prototype of modern multi-media.
I approach the séance as a medium, or a structural form of media manipulation, somewhere between an art and a belief-system, a cutting-edge demonstration of new technologies mixed with psychic projection.

It originated as a novel form of interactive performance, or staged improvisation with a live audience.

It ingeniously employs technological innovations in a theatrical environment that incorporates newly developed and experimental devices, such as the phonograph, slide projection and cinema, as well as hidden speakers, magnifying lenses, and mobile lighting., often creating, through special effects, the experience of disembodied voices and floating human figures approximating visitations of the dead and ghostly presences.

Through the performance of object manipulation, such as the Ouija board and the tarot card deck, as well as crystals, coins, dice, divination rods and spheres, disks, mirrors and photographs, among other things, the imaginary or make-believe meets true belief, or rather, occult magic interacts with technological science in an operating theater of mystery and wonder, as the living investigate the deceased, life & death share the stage.

A color-coded performance, where each character is primary-hued: Harry Houdini: blue / his dead mother: red / Arthur Conan Doyle: yellow / plus the medium Madame X: green..

Lightning, costumes and props reflect their inner tint. In addition, the characters use disguises, wigs and masks. All of the video roles are played by one actor. who often overlap in interaction and exchange, occupying the same table.

The ambience of the work ranges from mysterious to playful, rhythmically kinetic to hauntingly entrancing. Using distortion, dissolves, looping, negative, multiple-exposures, toggling, solarization, and staccato editing.

The video projection is screened with a live soundtrack involving a musical ensemble consisting of electronics, synthesizer, keyboard, samplers, tapes & CDs, drums and percussion, and voice, plus a contact-mic’d Ouija board and tarot deck. The group performs live to a graphic score.

The video, completed in May 2010, is 16 minutes.
