| Featured Artist Q&A |
1. - Q: When did you first start making artwork? Is there a particular artist or group of artists that really sparked your interest in making art?
A: I started making art from the first time I could hold a crayon in my hand. My mom is a really awesome artist and always had lots of art around our house and always had lots of art projects for us to do. So, I was constantly surround with art.
2. - Q: Did you go to art school? If so, what effect did art school have on your art? In what ways did they make you better? Do you feel you were taught things that you now have to “unlearn”?
A:I attended art school at the PA collage of art and design for two years. I was lucky to have really awesome teachers who let me use my style, instead of pushing other techniques on me. It was a good experience but over all school, of any kind, is really not for me so I chose to not stay the full four years. Although, I learned a great deal there, I feel that my style and idea of art was already well established before I attended. I see and appreciate the idea of art school and how it can forward you in the art world. With the type of art I make however, no real talent or skill is needed. And I don't think you need school to help you express yourself artistically. Even though I went to art school when I was 20, I feel I was self taught way before that. I was never good in school so I would just draw all the time. On the back of tests, on my desk, where ever and when ever I could. I was never really interested in learning 'how' to draw so I never read books about it or anything like that. I just drew.
3. - Q: What keeps you inspired to continue making new work?
A: Everything I see everyday. Everything that is pent up inside me.
4. - Q: What themes do you find yourself most attracted to and returning to in your work?
A: Portraits. I do a lot of self portraits, and even when it's not a sketch or drawing of me, there is always a piece or glimpse of me there. It took me awhile to figure it out and then I realized why. Two reasons. First I have dysmorfic disorder, which means when I look at myself I just see this hideous deformed thing, and I draw myself over and over to try to get the 'disorder' out of me. The second reason is really simple. I'm just trying to figure out who the fuck I am.
5. - Q: How much of each piece of your artwork would you consider comes from an intuitive or spontaneous sense of creating and how much is analytical and planned out?
A: I never plan anything out. I've always had a problem with that, and I don't enjoy doing it that way. I'd much rather just let things happen.
6. - Q: How important is music to your art? Do you listen to certain music when working? Any particular musicians?
A: I get distracted really easily so I don't usually listen to music when I draw. But I really don't have a set up, or ritual I follow when I'm gonna make something. I just grab a pen and some paper and draw.
