Todd Pendu's Facebook profile
I am Todd Brooks, better known as Todd Pendu. I am creator of Pendu Inc., the NY Eye & Ear Festival, and Scorpio Cinema. As musician, I play prepared guitar, oscillators, and electronics in Ghost Moth (with Daniel Carter), Abuse Report, chaos.CM.majik, Barkminer, and Feral Comb. I have published a book of collected poetic-texts entitled "Analekta: Semantic Texts" and am currently working on a non-fiction work tentatively titled "Bouzingo Means Noise" about a relatively obscure French literary collective from the 19th century that included some famous figures including Gerard de Nerval, Theophile Gautier, Petrus Borel, and others. I also write music reviews and features for the online magazine Foxy Digitalis.

Thanks for taking an interest. I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions so please don't hesitate to write me at info(at)pendu.org.  Don't be lazy. Don't make boring art. Cheers!

Submit your artwork, sounds, & writings!
"...art as ecstatic experience. Does it really matter which is called art by some and not by others? The analytical is a distraction from mysteries, pulling away the veil. I am interested in the overall effect of an artwork, not necessarily technical prowess. It's not important how an artist gets to the end. Crude art can be erotic and technical art can also be erotic; it's not a matter of only one or the other. Does it stimulate, arouse, or excite? Does it confuse, disorient, or estrange? These are the questions that matter. I'm interested in spontaneous ecstatic actions; emotive outbursts of creativity; raw expression derived from intuition and the pineal imagination; uninhibited tantrums of frenetic and vital energies; visceral and cathartic artforms and artworks. I'm interested in the unknowable; the dark and the secret..."

We want to give unique individuals and collectives the chance to show their work. If you'd like to submit your art or sounds for consideration to be featured online, send an email with a few words about yourself and be sure to include a link to your website, myspace, or flickr account but please do not send attachments.

The Pendu Organization is welcoming submissions from writers of original poetry and prose as well writers who want to contribute articles, interviews, features, essays, editorials, and reviews dealing with the topics of adhocism, bricolage, collage, assemblage, montage, drawing, arts & crafts, handmade art, d.i.y. art, editions & multiples, poetry, occultism, eroticism, junk-jamming, free-musics, and free-noise. We are not looking for armchair critics or sidline refs, we're looking for 'get your hands dirty' artists and poets. We are not looking for college dissertations or academic garble, we're looking for creativity from people who write from an experiential point of view. Send a short bio + sample of your writing and get your work published here. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

The Poetic and Mystical connections to the name Pendu...
Le Pendu is a French word meaning the HANGED-MAN and as used here is a reference to the 12th card of the Major Acanum of the Tarot, but is also used here in reference to the 19th Century mystic outsider poet Gérard de Nerval who hung himself after being rejected by a safehouse on a cold January evening in 1855.

"La rue de la Vieille-Lanterne, mort de Gérard de Nerval" by Gustave Doré (1855)
Gérard de Nerval was an eccentric literary figure, mystic, and pioneer of the avant-garde from the 19th Century who was made an outsider and finally 'suicided by society'. In the 1830’s, Nerval was an integral member of the short-lived anti-bourgeois collective known as the Bouzingo, a preeminent gang of artistic rebels pre-dating Dada by almost a century. He is well-remembered for his collection of 12 cryptic and mystical sonnets known as “Les Chimères” and for the book of prose containing his dreams and hallucinations known as “Aurelia” found tucked in his pocket at his death . He is also remembered for his outrageous behavior in his youth and for the fits of madness that forced him in and out of asylums for the last 10 years of his life. Tragically, while on a late night walk in the cold, Nerval was turned away from a safehouse and as a consequence committed suicide by hanging in the Rue de la Vieille-Lanterne on January 26, 1855. I am currently working on a historical biography of the Bouzingo entitled "Bouzingo Means Noise: Freaks, Weirdos, Visionaries, and Outsiders".

"Our dreams are a second life. I have never been able to penetrate without a shudder those ivory or horned gates which separate us from the invisible world." - Gérard de Nerval

Nerval committed suicide because he was literally pushed outside into the cold night. Pendu metaphorically stands as a place where outsiders are welcomed so that they will not be forced to such extreme actions.

ARCANUM XII - The INVERSION of PERCEPTION
Inversion as Subversive Aktion
"Le Pendu -
The Hanged-man, is the initiate into mysteries.  He understands the truth because he sees it from a different angle."

Le Pendu is the 12th card of the Major Arcana from the Tarot. The number 12 in Numerology and Astrology refers to cycles, seasons, completion, and endurance.  Example: 12 months / 12 Signs of the Zodiac / etc.

In the Tarot card (pictured to the Left), The left leg of the youth is crossed in back of the right "and his arms are folded behind his back in such away as to form a cross surmounting a downward pointing triangle. The figure thus forms an 'inverted symbol of sulphur' and, according to Levi, signifies the accomplishment of the Magnum Opus. The picture therefore depicts polarity temporarily triumphant over the spiritual principle of equilibrium. To attain the heights of philosophy, therefore, man must reverse (or invert) the order of his life." - from "Secret Teachings of All Ages" by Manly Palmer Hall
